根据记载，佛 陀在舍卫城中传授修禅于其弟子。弟子们按照那时佛的制度，结夏安居（每年印度夏季四月十五至七月十五），分别前往附近森林中学习禅修。弟子们各自选择一棵 大树做为他们修禅学习地。由于禅定时所散发出禅定的力量，使这些原本居住在大树上的树神、精灵等，都无法在这样的力量之下，继续安然的地居住在大树上而转 移到地面上寻找依附。树神与精灵们因此非常悲伤。它们都希望佛弟子们能够尽速地离开森林。然而，佛弟子们个个勇猛精进，禅修的力量越来越强大而充满整个森 林，树神精灵在无有选择的情况下唯有升起干扰佛弟子的修行，希望借此把佛弟子赶离森林。恐怖的声音加上难闻的气味，弟子们在忍受一段时间后，忍无可忍的情 况下回来报告佛陀，请求佛陀允许，到其他地方禅修。
佛陀在观察后知道那是最适合弟子们禅修的地方，于是佛陀就教导比丘们修习慈心，也即是以上慈经里的内容。
根据记载，通过培养慈心，以内心的安祥、温和、善顺、宁静、自在与对众生慈爱的心，最终感动了树神与精灵而不再干扰弟子们修行。
通过无限爱心修习法，它能使人愉悦入眠而不做恶梦，也可以使人远离一切的刀兵横祸的伤害。慈经能让内心安详、自在而走入非凡境界。
